We know emotions are high, and it can be scary to tell anyone you are pregnant—let alone your parents. You may think, “They are going to be so mad at me,” or “Will they ever talk to me again?” Every parent’s reaction to an unplanned pregnancy varies,  and their reaction might be different than you expected. The best thing you can do for yourself and them is to tell the truth. It will eliminate the heavy burden you’re carrying, and give you more room to think clearly about your pregnancy. Take a deep breath. You can do this.

How do I tell my parents I am pregnant?

Let’s take it one step at a time. You don’t have to know everything about your pregnancy before you tell them. Here are four easy steps to take to help you move forward:

1. Process the news yourself

This step may seem silly, but you must allow yourself time and freedom to process your emotions. Your emotions may change as you process, and that’s totally normal. You will feel so much better when you permit yourself to experience these emotions.

2. Choose the right time

Try to find a convenient and peaceful time to tell your parents the news. Avoid times when your mom and dad appear busy or stressed. This will allow them to process the news better and take it in fully. If your parents are separated, decide if you want to tell them at the same time or separately. If you feel uncomfortable or unsafe telling your parents, bring an adult you trust with you, or tell them over the phone.

3. Give Them Time To Process

Once you share the news, it will take time for them to process it. Parents can feel shock, excitement, or a mix of emotions. It’s important to give them space. Answer all the questions they ask you about your pregnancy to the best of your abilities.

4. The details of your pregnancy

Once you’ve shared about your pregnancy and given your parents a good day or two to process their own emotions, they may want to come alongside you to further confirm your pregnancy. Whether your parents are supportive or not, our team at First Step Women’s Center is here for you through it all.

Even though at-home pregnancy tests are very accurate, confirm your pregnancy with lab-quality pregnancy testing. Next, you will need an ultrasound to ensure your pregnancy is viable and healthy. Our team is here to walk you through each step and inform you about all your options so you can move forward with confidence.

Schedule a no-cost and confidential pregnancy testing appointment and ultrasound today. You don’t have to go on this journey alone.
