These are four little words you probably never expected to hear, “I think I’m pregnant.” If you and your partner recently had unprotected (or possibly even protected) sex and her period is late, there’s a chance she’s pregnant and you might be wondering if your health insurance will cover any medical and abortion services.
Is Your Girlfriend Pregnant?
Before you do anything, make an appointment at First Step Women’s Center to confirm the pregnancy. Although at-home pregnancy tests are reliable, they can be taken at the wrong time or without following directions carefully. First Step can provide you both with a no-cost on-site pregnancy test to verify her results.
Many pregnancies end in a miscarriage. In fact, the Mayo Clinic says at least one in four known pregnancies end in a natural miscarriage. It’s possible to get a positive pregnancy test result days or weeks afterward even though she’s no longer pregnant.
To check the viability of the pregnancy (to confirm she’s not miscarried), she needs to have an ultrasound. First Step Women’s Center offers no-cost ultrasounds too. You’ll also find out how far along she is. That date determines what type of abortion she qualifies for.
Insurance Policies & Abortion
Insurance policies usually only cover another person who is legally married to you or a dependent child. Insurance rules change from state to state and from insurance company to company. In some states, like Texas, all health insurance policies are prohibited from covering abortion services. Check with your health insurance provider to see what they currently cover.
In Illinois, you can have an abortion if you are under 18 without personally getting permission from one of your parents or a guardian. However, the Illinois Parental Notice of Abortion Act requires your doctor to notify one of your parents, a step-parent living in your household, or a grandparent 48 hours before performing the abortion. A judge can excuse you under certain circumstances.
Abortion costs in Springfield run around $450 for a medication abortion which can only be done up to the tenth week of pregnancy. For an in-clinic surgical abortion, costs can range from $450 to $1,500 depending on how long she’s been pregnant.
